What is a glucose screening test?
It's performed between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy to detect latent diabetes. First, fasting blood sugar levels are checked. Then, 50 grams of glucose is dissolved in water and given to the pregnant woman on an empty stomach. One hour later, the blood sugar is checked.
If the blood sugar level is above 140 mg/dl, a 100-gram glucose tolerance test is performed one week later. This is a longer and more arduous test. Blood sugar levels are checked while fasting and 1, 2, or 3 hours after a sugar drink. If two of the four values obtained are above the established standard, gestational diabetes is diagnosed. A diet plan is planned for the pregnant woman. Fasting and postprandial blood sugar levels are monitored. Blood sugar is usually controlled through diet. If necessary, insulin therapy is initiated.
