Umbilical Cord Knot

Sometimes, a real knot can form in a baby's cord while they are in the womb.

True nodes occur in 1 in 100 births.

It is more common in twin pregnancies within a single amniotic sac.

In early pregnancy, when there's a lot of movement, the baby's cord can become wrapped around their neck due to movement. Again, during this movement, the baby can pass through the cord loop and emerge from the opposite side, forming a true knot.

There are usually no problems. In rare cases, the cord may stretch during birth, reducing blood flow to the baby, causing distress. In rare cases, blood flow within the cord may stop, leading to fetal death.

It is accepted that 6% of natural knots cause infant death.

The umbilical cord knot cannot always be detected. However, it can be seen with ultrasound. If a true cord knot is detected during ultrasound examination, the mother is warned about the risks involved in pregnancy, and a cesarean section is preferred.
