Infertility Treatment
Infertility treatment encompasses all medical procedures used to increase a couple's chances of pregnancy. Infertility can be caused by either the woman or the man, and treatments are determined accordingly.
The most common causes of infertility in women include ovulation disorders, blocked fallopian tubes, polycystic ovary syndrome, and endometriosis. In men, the most common causes of infertility include low sperm count, decreased sperm motility, and sperm shape abnormalities.
Infertility treatment is generally considered in three main groups:
-
Medication: Medications used for women with ovulation disorders regulate ovulation and promote pregnancy.
-
Surgical Treatment: Conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes, fibroids, or endometriosis may require surgical intervention.
-
Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART): ART is a series of procedures that involve egg retrieval, sperm sampling, and fertilization performed in a laboratory setting. The most common ART procedures include In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), Intratubal Gamete Transfer (ITGT), and Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT).
Infertility treatment can be different for each couple, and its success depends on many factors. Couples experiencing infertility should consult with an obstetrician to assess their situation and determine the most appropriate treatment option.
