What is a spiral?
The spiral is the most commonly used and long-lasting contraceptive method.
IUDs prevent pregnancy by reacting to a foreign body, preventing sperm from passing through the uterus and fertilizing an egg, and by preventing the fertilized egg from implanting. The IUDs begin providing protection from the moment they are inserted.
There are three types of spirals;
1-Mirena: Hormonal IUD. It releases progesterone. This feature causes less bleeding. It treats patients with anemia. It protects against endometrial cancer. It prevents painful menstruation. A 5% chance of missing a period is experienced by women with Mirena. It provides 99% protection against pregnancy.
2-Copper IUD (copper T, nova T, multiload). These have copper on top. Protection lasts 5 years. Slightly increases menstrual periods. Painful periods may occur. Protection is 97%.
3-Gynofix: A new-generation intrauterine device. Its very small and flexible structure allows it to adapt to women's uteruses of varying sizes. It does not increase menstrual bleeding or cause intermenstrual bleeding. It is preferred in nulliparous women. It provides 99.5% protection.
When can an intrauterine device (IUD) be inserted?
The intrauterine device (IUD) is usually inserted during menstruation. This is when the cervix is wider, making insertion easier and ensuring you're not pregnant.
An IUD (spiral) can be inserted six weeks after a vaginal delivery or cesarean section, provided there are no complications during the physical examination. It doesn't matter whether you're menstruating or not during this time.
It can be inserted immediately after a miscarriage or abortion. However, sometimes a piece of tissue can remain in the uterus after a miscarriage or abortion. Therefore, it is more appropriate to insert it during the first menstrual period, which occurs one month after the miscarriage or abortion.
An IUD (spiral) can be inserted within the first 5-7 days after unprotected intercourse.
Intrauterine device (IUD) is a reliable method of contraception for suitable women.
