Bartholin Cyst and Abscess

There is a new method called Word catheter application in the treatment of Bartholin cyst and abscess.

The Bartholin glands are glands located on both sides of the entrance to the vagina. They open into the vaginal entrance through a thin duct, just above the hymen.

The function of the Bartholin glands is to provide lubrication to the vagina by secreting it during sexual intercourse, thus facilitating the entry of the penis into the vagina.

A Bartholin cyst occurs when the duct connecting the Bartholin gland to the vagina becomes blocked for any reason. If the cyst becomes infected, pus forms inside. The cyst or abscess is usually unilateral. Rarely, it can be bilateral.

The cause of a Bartholin's cyst is unknown. It usually occurs after trauma to the area. If infection occurs, a Bartholin's abscess may develop.

The diagnosis of Bartholin cyst and abscess is made by examination.

A Bartholin's cyst is usually painless and can range in size from a pea to the size of an orange.

Bartholin's abscess is very painful.

It seriously affects the patient's social life. It causes pain and redness in the external genital area, and difficulty walking. It can sometimes cause fever.

If there is any growth in the Bartholin complex after menopause, cancer may be considered.

Treatment of Bartholin cyst and abscess

If the Bartholin's cyst is small and does not cause any symptoms, there is no need for treatment.

In young women, the Bartholin gland should be preserved whenever possible.

If the Bartholin cyst is large and recurring frequently, it can be removed surgically.

Bartholin's cysts and abscesses are treated under local or sedation anesthesia, with an incision made over the cyst to drain the mucus or abscess from the gland. Marsupialization involves stitching the cyst wall outward to prevent the hole from closing. This surgery takes approximately 10 minutes. The patient feels immediate relief, and the Bartholin's gland heals completely within 6-8 days.

Another option is to make a small incision in the Bartholin's abscess and drain it through the small incision. Silver nitrate is placed in the cloth and left for 24-48 hours. The cyst lining is then removed.

A new method for treating Bartholin cysts and abscesses is called the use of a Bartholin catheter. This method involves draining the cyst or abscess through a small incision. A Bartholin catheter is inserted, and the catheter balloon is inflated. This catheter is left in place for 4-6 weeks, allowing the fluid within the gland to drain. This reduces the recurrence rate.

Regardless of how successful the treatment is, the probability of a Bartholin cyst recurring within six months after treatment is between 20-30%.
